One of the most common questions that arise when teaching fertility yoga, and yoga in general – is – Can I go upside down when I’m on my period? Will I get endometriosis? Will my endometriosis get worse?
At the time of this recording, March 2024, it is Endometriosis Awareness Month. Shining light on this debilitating and often ignored disease has left women suffering in pain for decades. I work with a lot of people who have endometriosis, as it affects fertility, and the topic of inversions always comes up! So here is my take on whether or not you should go upside down in yoga when you have your period.
In this episode I talk about about yoga inversions when you’re menstruating.
- what are full inversions and half inversions
- What is endometriosis
- Where to get good info about endometriosis
- Physiologically – going upside does not cause retrograde endometriosis
- Yoga tradition says no inversions while menstruating because of Apana Vayu – downward flowing energy
- Understanding your body as it cycles
- Respecting the flow of nature
- What poses I recommend for when you’re bleeding
