Non-toxic Alternatives

Finding good non-toxic alternatives to rebalance fertility and hormones is a common recommendation offered to those struggling to become pregnant. Toxic containing products should be eliminated from your life as they are harmful to fertility.

Research shows that the declining fertility rates (male and female factor) are correlated with increased use of chemicals and synthetic additives in our food, water, skin care, cleaning products, and packaging.

The major fertility disrupting toxics are estrogen disrupters, also known as xenoestrogens, that mimic or block our hormones. Xenoestrogens may prevent ovulation, disrupt implantation, lower sperm count and quality, and, possibly, increase the risk of pregnancy loss. Carcinogenic substances (cancer causing) are also hidden in so many of the products that we use daily.

Small steps to elimination is key, as replacing everything all at once can be very expensive and a major change to your lifestyle! It’s sometimes confusing to know what to avoid and eliminate.  So let’s break it down.

Best Non-Toxic Body Care Products

The skin is your body’s largest organ, and some research shows that it can absorb about 60% of what you put on it, and that substances can enter your blood stream within 26 seconds. Xenoestrogens and carcinogenics are running rampant in your body care products – shampoos, moisturizers, creams, soap, and make up.

PLEASE read your labels and stay away from:
Parabens: 79-90% of cosmetics on the market contain this preservative, it hides as Methyl/ethyl/butyl/isobutyl/propyl paraben.
PEG Compounds: foaming agents and penetration enhancers have been linked to birth defects and infertility, anything with ‘PEG’ in it.
4-Methylbenzylidene camphor (4-MBC): found in sunscreen and moisturizers with sun protection.
Phthalates: often in ‘fragrance’ or ‘parfum’ – manufacturers are not required to list fragrance ingredients, if it uses essential oils to scent, then it should indicate this on the label. Hides as anything with “phthalate” in its name, or DBP, DEHP, DMP, DEP
Phenosulf thiazine: A dye found in cosmetics, nail polish
Sulphates: foaming agent and emulsifier found in face and body wash, shampoos, soaps and toothpaste. Listed as Sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate, sodium dodecyl sulfate, sodium salt sulphuric acid, monododecyl ester

Best Non-Toxic Food Products

Many chemicals are used to grow, preserve, and package food – and many of these substances fall in the category of xenoestrogens. So yes, it truly does matter what you eat…especially when you are trying to conceive.

The EWG releases yearly guides on the biggest offenders (The Dirty Dozen) and biggest winners (The Clean Fifteen). It’s expensive to buy organic all the time, so these lists help you to spend your organic dollars wisely. And let’s not forget the single use plastic that many food products are sold in – they leach chemicals as well! So if you can buy without the plastic – do so!

Glyphosate – the most commonly used herbicide around the world – found heavily in grains and produce! Also really terrible for gut health. This will not be labelled on a package – but you can assume anything prepackaged and non-organic will have used glyphosate
FD&C Red No. 3 – A food dye found in candies, cakes, popsicles and other items
Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) – A food preservative found in potato chips, cereal, baked goods and chewing gum
Propyl gallate – A preservative found in foods that contain oil and fats
