Embryo Loss and Failed Embryo Transfer

Honoring Embryo Loss and Failed Embryo Transfers

Embryo loss & failed embryo transfers are true losses

I know the feeling well. You stare at the test. One line. Just one.

Or maybe it was the nurse’s voice on the phone: “I’m sorry, your beta was negative.”

At that moment, everything stops.

The hope you’d been carefully holding, the future you’d started to imagine, the quiet prayers and visualizations: it all shifts. Meanwhile, the world keeps spinning. Your inbox fills with work emails. Someone posts their gender reveal on social media. Life goes on as if nothing happened.

But something did happen. Something significant.

Let’s talk about the losses we don’t always name on this journeyThe ones that don’t come with sympathy cards or flowers. The ones people respond to with ‘at least you weren’t pregnant’ or ‘you can try again next month.

The grief that has no name

When you see one line instead of two, or when your beta comes back negative, you’re not just disappointed. You’re grieving.

You’re grieving the baby you’d already started to imagine. The due date you’d calculated in your head. The way you were going to tell your parents. The future that felt so close you could almost touch it.

You’re grieving the timeline you thought you were on. Because every lost month pushes everything further out. Now the due date is different, the birth year is different, the age gap between siblings is different. The whole plan shifts.

And if you’ve been doing fertility treatment, and you’ve lost an embryo in a failed transfer? That loss is profound. You lost an actual embryo. A real, tangible potential life that you invested so much in creating.

Here’s what nobody talks about: the financial loss layered on top of the emotional loss. For many of you, an unsuccessful transfer doesn’t just mean heartbreak, it means thousands of dollars gone. Weeks of injections and medications and appointments and procedures…

Yet the fertility industry, well-meaning friends, sometimes even your partner: they expect you to just dust yourself off and “try another round.” As if it’s that simple.

Here’s what I want you to know: Embryo loss and failed cycles deserve to be honored.

Your grief is real. Your loss is significant. And you don’t have to minimize it to make other people comfortable.

You’re allowed to be devastated. You’re allowed to grieve what didn’t happen. You’re allowed to take time before you’re ready to try again.

How to support yourself after embryo loss of a failed transfer

In those first hours and days after a negative result, be extra gentle with yourself:

Feel what you feel. Sadness, rage, numbness, deep exhaustion – all of it is valid. There’s no “right” way to grieve, and you don’t need to move straight into positivity or smile for anyone.

  • Try this: Instead of saying ‘I am sad’, say ‘Something really sad happened and I’m feeling sadness right now”. This allows you to not ‘become’ the emotion and emphasizes the ‘right now’ of it. It’s not in such a fixed state.

Give yourself permission. To cancel plans. To cry in the shower. To take the day off. To not answer the phone. To be angry at every pregnancy announcement that pops up on your feed. To avoid your pregnant friend’s baby shower because you need to protect your heart.

  • Try this: Here is a nice little script when you need to cancel something. “Something significant has come up that I need to tend to so regrettably I won’t be able to make it to your party/shower/gathering. I wish I could be there and share in this celebration with you. Thanks for understanding.”

Come back to your body kindly. Your nervous system needs support right now. Whether you’ve been through fertility treatment or trying naturally, your body has been in a heightened state of hope and anxiety. Gentle stretches, a warm bath, or a quiet walk can help you feel grounded again. Not to “fix” anything, but simply to remind yourself you’re still here.

  • Try this: Place your left hand on your heart and your right hand on top. Close your eyes and breathe deeply in and out for 10 cycles. It’s ok if the breath isn’t smooth at the beginning – it will slowly even itself out. Or sometimes – you cry through the whole thing. And that’s ok.

Ask for what you need. Whether that’s space alone, a good cry with your partner, or someone to just sit with you in silence. Be specific. People often want to help but don’t know how. Honor what feels true.

  • Try this: When you don’t know what you need, and no one else really knows – tune into your visceral reaction when you think of certain situations. For example: Visiting with your parents = tightening of the shoulders and squinching of the eyes. It’s not the time to visit your folks! Or…rolling up in bed with your partner and watching a movie = a deep sigh and a soft body. That is what you ask for.

Write it down. There’s power in putting words to your experience. Journaling can help you process emotions, release what you’re holding, and bring clarity to your experiences. You don’t need to write perfectly or profoundly. Just let it out. Here are some prompts to get you started:

  • What do I need to hear right now? (Examples: “It’s okay to be sad.” “This doesn’t mean I did anything wrong.” “I’m allowed to rest.” “You did everything right.”)
  • What am I ready to let go of? (Examples: Guilt about taking time off. The belief that I should be further along by now. Comparing my journey to anyone else’s. Trying to control everything.)
  • What has this journey revealed about my strength? (Examples: My ability to keep showing up. How much I can advocate for myself. The depth of love I already have for a child I haven’t met yet.)
  • How can I be gentle with myself today? (Examples: Say no to something that feels too hard. Take a nap without guilt. Let myself cry. Order takeout instead of cooking.)

Know when to seek additional support. Healthy grief moves, shifts, and changes over time. If you find yourself stuck in the same emotional place for weeks or months, or if your grief is interfering with daily functioning, please consider reaching out to a therapist who specializes in infertility or reproductive loss. There’s no shame in needing professional support through this journey

Finding support after a failed cycle

You don’t have to do this alone. And if you’re preparing to try again, consider building your support system now, before you need it.

Challenging moments are always ahead on this journey: family gatherings where people ask intrusive questions. Unexpected pregnancy announcements. The anxiety of another two-week wait. Social situations where you’re navigating questions about your body and choices that feel too personal.

All of that requires support. Community. Practices that ground you. A soft place to land when it all feels like too much.

Regular yoga practice can help ground you through the ups and downs of trying to conceive. The Fertile Body Yoga Virtual Studio offers classes designed specifically for this journey, giving you a safe space to move, breathe, and connect with others who understand.

And remember, your loss deserves to be honored. And you deserve support that meets you exactly where you are. Not where you think you should be, not where other people expect you to be, but right here, right now.

You are on a hard journey. And you’re showing up. And that takes tremendous courage.
